Planting Design Courses

I currently teach at SRUC King’s Building on their Garden and Greenspace Design course. I also deliver various CPD courses for the Society of Garden Designers. Guest lectures are given from time to time on request.

Topics I regularly cover are Plant Habitat Stereotypes, Plant Sociability and Constructing Plant Compositions. I have given guest lectures on the basics of an ecologically informed apporach to planting design. Recently I also delivered a new day event on Selecting Climate Resilient Trees.

Up coming CPD events will be listed here.

Get in touch to book me for a guest lecture in your design practice.

Ecologically Informed Planting – The Design Process

Designing ecologically informed herbaceous planting schemes involves a lot of plant knowledge, but there is more to it than that. In this course we will focus on the design process. How exactly do we move from a site analysis to a finished design. The final output of the process is an excel spreadsheet rather than a conventional planting plan. If you haven’t tried the excel method for designing naturalistic herbaceous planting schemes this will be a good introduction. As with all my courses it'll run over two half day sessions. One session covers the theory, then you'll have a week to apply the theory and we'll discuss your own designs in the second session. These second sessions are always very enjoyable and engaging, hearing from a variety of people based in different parts of the country. Please allow for some time to do the small design exercise between sessions.
